Wedding Photographers: Finding & Selecting the Right One

To find the right wedding photographer, start off by relying on recommendations from the wedding professionals you've been working with, as well as friends who are particular. Ask to see recent work. Make sure you see a completed wedding photo album, and that it tells a story. Make sure your personalities click and that you will be comfortable working together.

Plan for formal portraits prior to the wedding. Have a list of any special shots you want of relatives and guests. Discuss if you want both color and black and white shots, and which shots should be in each film. Ask about lighting. What will be required for different locations, especially where there isn't natural light.

Discuss fees up front. Make sure you review what is included in the price quote and what isn't. Some hidden costs to ask about: photographer's assistant, film, proofs, travel costs, hours (does the cost include all day coverage), the wedding photo album.

Book your photographer as far in advance as possible. Expect 6-8 weeks for original prints to be delivered. Final wedding photo albums can take 10 weeks or more.
